East Harlem

Apartments in East Harlem, NY

East Harlem is a neighborhood of Upper Manhattan. It’s also known as El Barrios or Spanish Harlem because it has one of the largest Latin communities in New York City. Most of the population has origins in Mexico, Puerto Rico, Cuba, and the Dominican Republic. East Harlem is famous for its contributions to salsa music and Latin freestyle. Ironically, Italian Harlem – an area with a large Italian population – is also part of East Harlem.

East Harlem started out as a large rural area that was mainly populated with poor Scandinavian and Irish residents. It became more urban with the completion of the  Lexington Avenue subway. East Harlem grew to be a more racially diverse neighborhood by the beginning of the 21st century. In the 2010s, the effects of gentrification started to show and it was named “New York’s next hot neighborhood” by the New York Times. In addition to its booming real estate market, East Harlem has a lot to offer in terms of the arts, cultural scenes, and restaurants.

East Harlem Boundaries

East Harlem is actually not considered a part of Harlem. East Harlem is bounded from the south by 96th Street. It’s northern and eastern boundaries are the Harlem River, and its western boundary is Fifth Avenue.
