Windsor Terrace

Located in the central part, Windsor Terrace is a small neighborhood in Brooklyn, New York City. It is surrounded by Kensington from the south, Prospect Park from the east, Green-Wood Cemetery from the southwest and Park Slope from the northwest. The primary zip code of the neighborhood are 11215 and 11218 and it is toured by the 72nd Precinct of the New York City Police Department. 

Population

According to the stats of 2010, the population of Windsor Terrace was 20,988 with a density of 16,000/km2 (42,000/sq mi). More than half of the population here is White and a fraction of Hispanic, Black and Asian.

History

Present-day Windsor Terrace was first built by William Bell between 1849 and 1851. Most of the people here were Irish in the 20th century. Throughout history, Windsor Terrace remained a residential area and different immigrants like Irish, Italian-American, and German-American settled in the row houses of the neighborhood.

First major development took place here at the turn of the 20th century. With the passage of time, Windsor Terrace became a diverse neighborhood with Hispanic, Latino, Greek and Maronite Lebanese started to move here.

Windsor Terrace has separated into two parts thanks to the Prospect Expressway which runs through the middle. Some streets of the neighborhood were bisected by the expressway and remained so like Vanderbilt Street and Greenwood Avenue, whereas some streets are bridged over the highway including Prospect Park West, Seeley Street and Terrace Place.

A few notable writers are linked to Windsor Terrace including Denis Hamill and Pete Hamill. Paul Auster, a famous laureate of Brooklyn, lived nearby. It is also believed that Isaac Asimov wrote the story ‘Nightfall’ in his bedroom when he was living in one of the streets of Windsor Terrace. Mindy Kaling wrote her award-winning play ‘Matt & Ben’ when she was a resident of Windsor Terrace.  

What’s here?

Since the 1990s, the crime rate has reduced in this neighborhood. Windsor Terrace is home to many public schools including PS 154 Windsor Terrace School, and PS 130 Parkside School. It also has a branch of Brooklyn Public Library located at Fort Hamilton Parkway.

The area is served by F and G trains with four local buses running in the neighborhood. Express buses also pass through Windsor Terrace but they don’t have a stop here. While living here, you would have plenty of access to green places. Few streets and low-slung houses give Windsor Terrace a suburban feel.

Life runs slowly here and you cannot expect nightlife in Windsor Terrace. However, you will find a good mix of new businesses and restaurants, along with decent educational institutes. One can expect unexpected appeal here as the people are very friendly. Windsor Terrace is home to diverse cuisine. Prospect Avenue is filled with bars, restaurants and cafes.

Windsor Terrace is filled with wood-frame townhouses and brick row houses. You can find plenty of multi-family homes, condos and apartments at variable prices.
