NYC is on the cusp of braving the second wave of COVID-19 and authorities want to contain the virus to stop the unbridled march of the pandemic. It is in no way affordable to shut down the city once more. It is not merely a financial loss but a psychological pain as well.

Therefore, keeping all the aspects in mind, NYC policymakers are busy finding ways to kill the snake without breaking the stick.

The Second Wave Of Corona:

Initially, Coronavirus had a rampant run making cities after cities shut down. With time, came the counteractions, and management learned the trick to contain them. They implemented strict health protocols and social distancing and the results were encouraging. Towards the end of summer, economic activities resumed and people took a sigh of relief.

It did not prove long enough, as we are already anticipating a second wave of COVID-19 in NYC. If we look at the data meticulously, we come to know that the Corona positive cases are again gaining momentum. In October, the COVID-19 patients rose near the threshold of average cases of the curve. It cued the mayor to take the matter seriously and bring back strong policies to curb its effect. It would be a lot tough this time as people are exhausted already but the silver lining is that they have complete information and well prepared this time.

So far, things are very much in control and they are capable enough to manage it. But we must not take it casually as we know how fatal it can become if not contained properly.

Coronavirus Checkpoints at Bridges and Tunnels:

In the wake of the second wave of the corona, the state has passed on new guidelines for people to observe and asked to cooperate with the authorities. One of them is to establish checking points of Coronavirus at the entrances and exits of NYC bridges and tunnels.  The New York City Sheriff’s Office has vowed to implement this order in letter and spirit.

It would work on a random pick and choice as officers may stop people randomly and conduct their tests. In addition to it, officers would educate the travelers about the heath protocols of the pandemic. Those who are coming from other states would be asked to self-quarantine to learn if they carry the virus or not. Contact forms will be got filled by the travelers so that tracking them could be easy.

It seems that Staten Island remains the focal point of curbing the second wave of corona in the city. If we keep the recent data before us, we may get to know the trends as there were only 36 vehicles stopped at Manhattan checkpoints compared to 1,350 stopped to register travelers at Staten Island.

When the plan was presented to the citizens, checkpoints were set up in Staten Island for the first three days. It was a part of the testing phase before being expanded to the rest of the city. Initially, six bridges and tunnels were being scrutinized.

They are as follows:

  • George Washington Bridge
  • Goethals Bridge
  • Bayonne Bridge
  • Outer Bridge Crossing
  • Lincoln Tunnel
  • Holland Tunnel

Consequences Of Violation:

Mayor de Blasio has expressed the importance and urgency to follow these guidelines on various occasions. He categorically mentioned that failing to follow guidelines would be considered a violation of state law and the person who would violate have to face the consequences such as high penalties. He warned that if in any way we want to keep our city healthy, we have to implement this instruction and requested people to get a test if they have a travel history.

According to the State’s quarantine order, anyone who has visited any of the restricted states is obliged to self-quarantine for fourteen days. In case of failing to do that person may get punished with penalties as high as $10,000.

It applies to everyone, be it the New Yorkers coming home from other states or new visitors coming to New York City.

Reasons Behind Strict Orders:

According to the New York City’s Test and Trace Corps, out of all the new cases, every fifth case is due to recent travel history to other states which are now hotspots of COVID-19.

There are 35 states which have a higher infection rate and people visiting or coming from these states are a major concern. Mayor Bill de Blasio said we need to track and restrict the cases coming from other states and announced to establish checkpoints at bridges and tunnels in all the boroughs.

Airlines and the Port Authority police are ordered to get contact forms filled in from travelers along with travel history.

Note: For mandatory quarantine, travelers will be entertained with food and medicine delivery. Direct access to the doctor will also be managed.

Final Thoughts:

We have not come out of the horrific first episode of the COVID-19 and we are anticipating yet another. And as far as our experience goes, we least want something remotely similar to it.

There remains no option for us but to take these guidelines seriously. Government is only one part of it we have to complement the other. They have done their job of making effective policies. Now the onus is on us to how well we implement it.

Until the vaccine does not emerge on the horizon, let us take it seriously.

Stay Safe, Stay Healthy.
