Vinegar Hill

Located between DUMBO and the Brooklyn Navy Yard, Vinegar Hill is a neighborhood in Brooklyn, New York City. Initially, known as Irishtown, Vinegar Hill is home to a large Irish-American population. The total area of the neighborhood is six blocks from the Brooklyn Navy Yard to Bridge Street.

According to the stats of 2016, the population Vinegar Hill was 2,671 with a density of 10,000/km2 (26,000/sq mi). Vinegar Hill is labelled as one of the quiet neighborhoods in the city where residents like to know each other.

History

Present-day Vinegar Hill was first inhabited by Canarsee Indian but in the 17th century, Europeans arrived here and started a business with Native Americans. The area from Vinegar Hill to Fulton Street was then occupied by the Dutch in 1637.

Upon the arrival of Dutch, Canarsee were already weekend due to illness and warfare and hunger. And as a result, they sold the land to the incoming Dutch. In the start of the 19th century, the US government purchased a few acres of the Brooklyn Navy Yard. The neighborhood was named after the battle of Vinegar Hill – the last battle between Irish and English.

The neighborhood started developing faster in the start of 19th century and in the 1840s many Italian styled apartments were built here. In 1850s, Vinegar Hill became a hub of illegal distilleries and the alcohol business produced a lot of cash for working professionals. In the start of the 20th century, the warehouses of neighborhood were turned to office spaces.

Vinegar Hill experienced heavy destruction due to the construction of Manhattan Bridge in the 1900s. However, at the same time, the neighborhood grew industrially and the family-houses paved the way for warehouses and factories. Due to its proximity to Manhattan and scenic views, many newcomers’ especially artists moved to the neighborhood and revolutionized the area.

Transportation

The New York City Subway's York Street station is located close to Vinegar Hill and it is served by A, C, and F trains. You can also use B62 and B67 bus to approach the neighborhood.

Education

Top public schools serving Vinegar Hill are Baccalaureate School for Global Education, Stuyvesant High School, and Townsend Harris High School.
